Located off I-93, north of Bristol is the small
town of Alexandria, population about 1500. It is the home of a portion of beautiful
Newfound
Lake. Alexandria is located on Town Pond Road off of Route 3-A and is predominately a bedroom community.
Luther Ladd, the first enlisted man killed in the Civil War, called Alexandria home.
The town is home to several farms, including:
Bear Mountain Farm
Cardigan Mountain Orchard
Kemah Farm
Ledge Hill Farm
Built by Appalachian Mountain Club as one on NH's earliest lodges, then renovated in 2005,
Cardigan Lodge is located on a 1,200-acre reservation and has been repurposed and now offers a variety of family-friendly activities and fifty (50) miles of trails.
Welton Falls is referred to by some as
"the secret waterfall." It's located on the Fowler River, has a 30 verticle foot drop, and the pool below is reported to be good for swimming but
do use caution. Water levels can vary.
Take the Manning Trail off Shem Valley Road. You will cross the Fowler River, which can be surprisingly difficult after heavy rains or snow melt. The hike is about two miles, and brings you to a stunning waterfall - beautiful in any season.
Dining and lodging are available in nearby
Bristol. There are many dining and lodging choices along Route 3-A.
