Manchester, NH (7/10/16) - Rowdy Tellez and Dwight Smith Jr. homered as the Fisher Cats reached the All-Star break with an 8-4 win over Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Stadium.
Tellez' home run, his 13th of the season, capped a five-run third inning against Binghamton knuckleballer Mickey Jannis (3-8). Smith's home run, his ninth, was a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Shane Dawson (5-4) earned the win, allowing one run in five innings on six hits for New Hampshire (40-49). He walked three and struck out four. Luis Santos worked three innings in relief before turning the ball over to Chris Smith to finish the game.
In the Fisher Cats third inning, Derrick Loveless and Emilio Guerrero started the inning with singles and Ian Parmley laid down a bunt. Jannis threw wild to first, allowing Loveless to score to make it 1-0. Guerrero scored on a groundout by Christian Lopes. After Ryan Lavarnway walked, Tellez homered.
The Mets (39-49) scored a run in the top of the fifth inning on consecutive singles by Derrik Gibson, Phillip Evans and All-Star 1B Matt Oberste.
Binghamton added two more runs in the top of the eighth. Xorge Carillo singled and L.J. Mazzilli doubled. Carrillo scored on a ground out by Maikis De La Cruz and Stefan Sabol singled to make it 5-3.
After the Fisher Cats opened the lead back to 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Mets tacked on a run with three consecutive hits including a run-scoring single by Oberste in the top of the ninth.
The teams split the abbreviated two-game series with the teams postponed because of wet grounds on Saturday. That contest will be made up when the Mets return next month.
The Eastern League has reached it's All-Star Break with the game to be played on Wednesday night in Akron, OH. Two Fisher Cats will participate in this year's game, Tellez and reliever Murphy Smith. New Hampshrie host next year's All-Star Game at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
