Concord, NH - On June 15th, 2017 Conservation Officers were requested to respond to the area of Hall Road near downtown Concord due to a moose walking within the neighborhood. The moose made several attempts to cross I-93 but was forced back due to the presence of NH State Police Troopers and Conservation Officers along the on ramp at exit 13 southbound. The moose was contained a safe distance from the interstate, avoiding what would have had potentially terrible consequences.

Rob Calvert of NH Fish and Game was able to dart the moose with a tranquilizer once the moose was in a wooded area and a safe distance away from the Interstate. The moose eventually succumbed to the tranquilizer, passing out approximately 100 yards into the woods behind the Machine Craft Company and JCB Excavators Company. Tranquilizing an animal this size has varied results, the decision to tranquilize is difficult as it can often kill the animal due to the stress it endures during transport. Once the moose was subdued by the drug, Conservation Officers worked diligently to hobble the moose and prepare it for transport.

Volunteers from both JCB Excavators and Machine Craft assisted in pulling the 600 pound animal out of the woods and through a small swamp where a fork lift operator lifted it and brought it to a trailer provided by USDA Wildlife Services.

The young cow moose was transported to the western part of the State where it was released and eventually walked away. NH Fish and Game thanks all volunteers, NH State Troopers and USDA Wildlife services in assisting in keeping both the citizens and wildlife of NH safe today.
