Benton, population about 350, is a small town surrounded by the
White Mountain National Forest, nestled on Route 116, between I-91 and I-93,
and east of the town of Haverhill.
The town was originally named Coventry, as many early settlers came from that town in Connecticut. It was renamed Benton after "Old Bullion,"
Thomas Hart Benton, the crusty Missouri senator who pushed for settlement of the western frontier in the early 1800s.
Benton is the location of
Mount Moosilauke, (4,802 feet) well-known to hikers of the Appalachian Trail. Except for the
Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, most services for
Mount Moosilauke are located in the nearby town of
Warren.
Dining and lodging are available in the village of
Woodsville, about 10 miles to the northwest.
