Grafton, NH
The town is named after Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton (yes that is a mouthful), a member of the Whig party in England who served as Prime Minister. The town is located along Route 4, just south of Canaan and midway between I-89 and I-93. Think about idyllic little villages on Christmas cards, and you've got the idea!
Grafton is the home of Ruggles Mine, a sort of theme park that allows children to get the experience of life as a miner. This one requires parents to use their thinking ahead skills (flashlights, sweaters, snacks, et al). Still, this can be a fun and rewarding day trip, with a little geology lesson thrown in. Perhaps not everyone's activity of choice, it's still pretty darn cool!
This is the country, folks, so be prepared to do some driving. Thankfully, the Grafton Country Store on Route 4 offers deli sandwiches made to order, a bakery and general store items.
While in town, you may want to just scoot 1.5 miles northwest on Route 4 to Haunting Whisper Vineyards. The husband & wife team owners are friendly, and eager to their their passion for wine with you. Do check their web site for hours, etc.
Dining and lodging are available in the nearby towns of Canaan, Enfield and New London (all about 15 miles).
Enjoy the peace & quiet and great vistas in Grafton.
