NH Marching Band Established in the North Country
The Summertime Marching Band organizes in Monroe.
Two northern NH residents are hoping to bring back the grand tradition of Marching Band music to the area. Mary Choate of Monroe, NH and Perry Williams of Lyman, NH started The Summertime Marching Band and have 16 members so far. "Our first practice was on January 4th and we have a good mix of instruments from piccolo to tuba" said Choate. "We are looking for musicians of all ages and have specifically picked music that is easy to learn but still has that traditional marching band sound", said Williams. "Many of the area towns can no longer find bands to play in their parades so we decided to do something about it", added Williams. "To me, it's not a parade if there's not a marching band."
The Summertime Marching Band will be practicing once a month in Monroe NH, but will also have smaller "sectional" practices for those people who need help getting up to speed with their instrument. "Many of us played in high school, but have not picked up the instrument much in the past few decades", said Williams. "Our goal is to march in the Woodsville NH Fourth of July Parade, but we've already had several inquiries from other towns who want play in their parades", added Choate.
The band currently has members in the Littleton-Lisbon area but also has a few members from Vermont. Many of members play in other groups such as bluegrass bands, community bands and chamber groups, but some just wanted to dust off their old instruments and get back into music again. "It's just like riding a bicycle", said Williams. "One of our members hasn't picked up a Baritone Horn in 30 years, but after a couple weeks, he's playing like a pro!"
