Castle in the Clouds is the unrestrained home of shoe tycoon Gustave Plant. The arts & crafts mansion was built with state of the art amenities, and makes the most of its mountaintop setting. For architecture fans, this one is a must! The Carriage House Café, located on the grounds offers tasteful lunches that have garnered high praise by the critics.

The dramatic and lovely mansion in entirety or portion can be rented for weddings and corporate events. There are a variety of events, and even a "boot camp" fitness series at the castle.

The road to the top is a twisty-one, so this might not be the best place to visit on a rainy day.

A little known fact is that horseback rides are available on part of the grounds. Riding in the Clouds, 455 Old Mountain Road, Moultonborough offers guided tours on the grounds. You can go to their website and "meet the horses"â€"say hello to Bumble Bee, Copper and Bertha at Riding In The Clouds.

You will want to experience the "over-the-top" opulence of Castle in the Clouds. It's a bit confusing but the access road is just off Route 171.
