Orange is a rural community, just east of
Canaan, on Route 118. Originally named Cardigan after a British nobleman, the town was eventually called Orange, possibly due to high levels of ochre, a red-orange pigment used to manufacture paint.
Orange is the home to
Mount Cardigan, Cardigan Mountain State Forest and
Cardigan Mountain State Park.
Mount Cardigan soars to 3,121 feet. The huge rocky summit is well above the tree line, and affords views of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. It's a great area for hiking.
Dining is available in
Canaan (about 2 miles). Dining and lodging are available in
Hebron (about 10 miles),
Enfield (about 9 miles), and
Lebanon (about 12 miles).
Enjoy the view and solitude of the eastern White Mountain in Orange.
