Tamworth is a town on Route 113 between Routes 16 and 25, fifteen minutes south of Conway. It includes the village of Chocorua (and the beautiful Chocorua Lake, photo below), and the village of Wonalancet, home to many Sandwich Mountain Range hiking trailheads.
William James (1842-1910 - brother of writer Henry James) was a resident of Chocorua Village. He was a physician and trained psychologist, and is heralded as the first person to teach a psychology course in the United States.
The
Barnstormers Theatre Company was founded in 1931 in Tamworth by Francis Cleveland, the youngest son of President Grover Cleveland, who summered in Tamworth. The emphasis is on theatre education, and they maintain the "old school" practice of producing eight plays in eight weeks during the summer.
Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm, 58 Cleveland Hill Road, offers a time
capsule look at the role of a father & son team of physicians serving rural NH for nearly 100 years. The activities include farm tours, educational programs, and meals prepared with farm fresh items. They also hold instructional overnight camps for children. Their campus includes over a dozen buildings, a children's fishing pond, dozens of acres and much more.
The
Tamworth Distilling Company opened its doors in May, 2015, and invites you to visit. They produce whiskey, vodka and gin, and have plans for other products. (See photo below)
The
NH Mushroom Company, 153 Gardner Hill Road, was founded here and offers tours on most Sunday afternoons. Call ahead, (603-323-0097) to inquire about times, and others days, etc.
If you have a hankering for baked products, stop at
Grammy Gordon's, 29 Tamworth Road (603-323-2005). Her website does NOT do Grammy Gordon justice, nor does it articulate more than a fraction of her many culinary treats. She offers savory and dessert pies, breads, rolls, cakes, cobblers, crisps and sweet rolls, including over 70 flavors of sweet pies alone but may only have a handful in the display case at any given time. CALL AHEAD with 2-3 hours notice, tell her what you'd like, and she'll have it ready on your arrival. (We challenge you to try and stump her!)
There are a number of restaurants in Tamworth and Chocorua, including Rosie's, 1547 White Mountain Highway, serving big breakfasts and lunch until 2 PM. G3 Fancy Foods and Gas, 9 White Mountain Highway, Chocorua hides delicious Mediterranean cuisine behind the gas pumps outside!
There are no hotels/motels in Tamworth but there are a couple of bed and breakfasts:
