Thornton is a town that enjoys great scenery and Pemigewassat River access, as well as its proximity to I-93. The town is named for Matthew Thornton, who signed the Declaration of Independence. A statesman, scholar and physician, Thornton practiced medicine in New Hampshire after working as a battlefield surgeon in the Revolutionary War.
Thornton has local folklore, which contributed to local landmarks like Ghost Hollow and Knocker's Hole.
Local dining includes the
Benton's Sugar Shack for breakfast and lunch, and Tony's Italian Grille and Pub. Lodging includes
Gilcrest Cottages and Motel, 2378 US Route 3, and the
Shamrock Motel & Cottages, 2913 US Route 3.
It's close to the river, it's close to
Plymouth and
Plymouth State University, it's close to I-93 and just a little ways to
Lincoln, etc. Thornton has the scenery, services and activities, and it's a bit closer than the more "touristy" areas.
